I want to talk today about Worship. And the reason I want to is because I realized that service as a substitute for worship is actually what the bible would call idolatry. Here's the thing we need to remember, "activity is the enemy of adoration." But true service is born out of authentic worship to God alone and not out of price or selfish ambition.
John 4:23-24 MSG “It’s who you are and the way you live that count before God. Your worship must engage your spirit in the pursuit of truth. That’s the kind of people the Father is out looking for: those who are simply and honestly themselves before him in their worship. God is sheer being itself—Spirit. Those who worship him must do it out of their very being, their spirits, their true selves, in adoration.”
Adoration is probably the key definition of worship. We get so caught up in acts of service that we give in to the temptation of running around answering the call to services without actually ministering/adoring or WORSHIPPING The Lord.
So, "to worship is to experience the reality, to touch life. It is to know, to feel, to experience the resurrected Christ in the midst of gathered community".
"Worship is the human response to the divine initiative".
"Worship is our response to the overtures of love from the heart of the Father".
True worship is one of spirit and truth. "We have not worshipped the Lord until Spirit touches spirit". "Our spirit must be ignited by the divine fire"! "When Spirit touches spirit the issue of forms is wholly secondary". In other words we are free in Christ to use whatever forms will enhance our worship.
But we must worship the Lord according to how the Lord would want to be worshipped. If you are married, you know that trying to tell your wife you adore her or love her by taking her on a hunting trip or golf outing, because that is what you love not her, will never go over well. But if you find out the thing that she loves and then make the time or opportunity to experience that with her then she knows how much you adore her. Things like taking her to a play, a movie and a nice dinner, shopping to her favorite store or an outing to her favorite garden to walk are just a few tips by the way ;)
Here's the thing, we must worship the Lord and make God our true and only object of adoration. When we begin to experience God in our everyday lives we can rest assured that we will experience God in our corporate expression and experience as well. When we have given our lives as an expression of worship whether at work, cooking in the kitchen, along a walk or even out for sport we can rest assured that this practice or discipline will follow us into every other activity and especially in our gathering together in worship of the Father.
In fact, we must live throughout the week as an heir of the kingdom, listening for His voice, seeking and obeying His word. And then, since you have heard his voice throughout the week, you know that you will hear His voice as you gather for public worship!
I'll end with this... We talk a lot on this platform about being Authentic. So, "If we long to go where God is going and do what God is doing, we must move into deeper, more authentic worship."
