I remember when I first started feeling the draw from God to do more regarding service to him. I wanted to do everything. I would travel all over to try and help people fulfill their calling and at the same time get some satisfaction in my life that I was doing a good thing as well.
But as I moved forward I realized my motivation was skewed and had very little to do with helping others and more to do with self gratification........I also realized that God had specific things for me to do and that I needed to listen to him and focus my effort to be efficient and a good steward of my talents.
When David first became a recognized King he had an idea. He called Nathan, the resident prophet, to confer about his grandiose ideas. The first was to build a temple for God. He said why am I living in luxury while the ark is housed in a tent. Nathan listened and said do whatever you want....you're the King and God is with you. I am sure David was on cloud nine thinking about being the King that would build a house for God.
But later that night God reached out to Nathan and said.....nope, I have different plans, so Nathan had to go back to and tell David that God did not want him to build the temple. God said, "I took you from being a shepherd to the most powerful man in the region. I destroyed your enemies and now am giving you a dynasty of future leaders that I also have plans for. That particular task is going to be for your son."
2 Samuel 7:8-9 NLT
“Now go and say to my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has declared: I took you from tending sheep in the pasture and selected you to be the leader of my people Israel. I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have destroyed all your enemies before your eyes. Now I will make your name as famous as anyone who has ever lived on the earth!
God has a plan for us. We need to listen to because we are part of a greater plan that only He can see. Sometimes He opens doors and sometimes He closes them. Our motivation should always be fulfilling His plan for our lives and that takes checking our ego as well as listening to wise counsel from our brothers and mentors.
Are we serving Him or are we serving ourselves......sometimes the calling might be to prepare the next generation to pick up where we leave off. That's what Legacy Leadership is.
