Casting the Net

Let me set the scene: Post resurrection and the disciples have been in a boat fishing all night…they caught nothing.

“Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize it was Jesus.”

He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”

“No” they answered.

He said, “throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.” John 21: 4-6

Peter was a fisherman, that was his trade and he was good at it. Prior to following Jesus as a disciple, this was his profession and how he provided for his family. Now, Peter must have been very frustrated with how the night was going. He and the other disciples with him fished all night long and had caught nothing.

How frustrated they must have been. Have you ever experienced this…working hard and not gaining any ground?

Now in the midst of this frustration as the sun begins to crest skyline, a man walks up and tells you how to do your job. “Say what??? I am a professional, I know what I am doing!” However, Peter must have been at his wits end, because he simply complies with the man's request. And what a nonsensical request it was. He simply said “throw the net on the right side of the boat”. Are you serious? There is dang near no difference from the left-side to the right-side of this boat. But he listened, complied, and reaped a bountiful harvest. A harvest so grand that the disciples couldn’t even haul in the catch. Later in the chapter it reveals that there were 153 fish in the net…153!

From 0 to 153 by simply listening to Jesus!

Have you been fishing all night? Are you pedaling as fast as you can and not gaining any ground? Are you doing everything “humanly” possible, and still coming up short? Maybe it’s time to listen to the man on the shore? Maybe it's time to choose the right-side of the boat to cast our net!

Take some time this week in prayer with the Lord, and ask specifically “where do I need to cast my net?” When you hear His reply through the soft spoken word of the Spirit, no matter how nonsensical it may seem; comply and watch the harvest come in…

Stop searching for the fish, simply ask the Lord where to cast your net.
